Ask what the service actually does.
Updates, backups, monitoring, recovery and functional testing are different jobs. Ask whether someone verifies a purchase journey after a change, whether failed jobs are followed up and who handles a supplier problem. “Managed” does not specify those tasks by itself.
Check response arrangements and working hours as well as monitoring. An alert can identify a problem without anyone being responsible for resolving it. Agree the next action and the person who owns it.
Separate service fees from the rest of the shop.
Hosting, extension renewals, mail services and payment fees can remain outside a maintenance package. Avoid counting an included licence twice, but do not remove it from the budget until the contract genuinely covers it.
Compare actual renewal periods and a consistent tax basis. A first-year discount and a normal renewal are different inputs. Keep currency and any usage-based fees visible instead of forcing unlike amounts into one monthly figure.
A fictional monthly comparison.
These are invented example amounts, not a Dutch market average or a Daymerce offer. They illustrate the calculation and the questions that remain.
| Item | Period amount | Monthly equivalent | Question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting | €24 per month | €24 | Which recovery service is included? |
| Extension renewals | €180 per year | €15 | Are these already in another package? |
| Maintenance service | €40 per month | €40 | Does this include checkout verification? |
| Recurring total | — | €79 | Keep incident work separate |
Compare the responsibility for one real incident.
Ask how each proposal would handle a failed checkout after an update. Who investigates, who changes the site and who verifies recovery? Is specialist supplier support included, or billed separately? A small fictional incident of two hours at €75 adds €150; it is not part of the €79 recurring total above.
Then review overlap in your tools using the plugin-audit guide. A cheaper licence is not a saving if the change removes a needed service or adds work. Choose the combination of coverage and daily usability that fits your business.
