Name the problem the move must solve.
“Too much admin” can mean unreliable updates, difficulty finding customer information or a process that requires many separate screens. A hosted platform changes some technical responsibilities, but it does not automatically settle every service, product or campaign workflow.
Describe one repeated problem and its required outcome. For example: “When a customer asks about an order, I want the purchase and previous context together.” That can be evaluated more clearly than a general promise of easier ecommerce.
Test the same tasks in both proposals.
WooCommerce and Shopify offer different operating models and extension ecosystems. Use each supplier’s current documentation and the exact proposed configuration. Do not compare a fully extended setup on one side with a basic plan on the other.
| Task or decision | Evidence to request for each proposed setup |
|---|---|
| Help a customer | Open their purchase and relevant history in the actual interface |
| Change a product | Update the required variants, images and prices |
| Run an offer | Test eligibility, exclusions and the checkout result |
| Maintain the shop | Identify responsibility for hosting, updates, backup and recovery |
| Estimate cost | Include actual plan, renewals, payment assumptions and required services |
| Connect other systems | Verify the supported data direction and exception handling |
Include the work of moving.
A migration affects more than product descriptions. Investigate customer access, order history, product identifiers, external systems, redirects and search landing pages. Decide what transfers, what remains available for reference and how the live cutover is verified.
Use representative products and customers in an agreed test environment before choosing on a polished demonstration alone. Include training and changes to staff procedures in the comparison. A different screen can feel easier and still require important operational work.
Choose the smallest change that meets the real need.
If the business needs a capability or operating model the current platform cannot reasonably support, a migration may be worth investigating. If the problem is a specific technical fault, fixing the setup can be the relevant next step. If the daily work lacks connection, evaluate the workspace around it.
Keep the conclusion tied to your tasks and the actual offer. There is no universal winner for every shop. Review the choice again when the business requirements change, rather than treating one comparison as a permanent verdict.
